Correct circuits = correct diagrams

For many electricians in Belgium, creating a correct single-line diagram is essential to ensure compliance with electrical regulations. However, in practice, many diagrams lack logical clarity. They are often approved during inspection but can lead to confusion later on.

In this article, we highlight two common mistakes and explain how to avoid them with a smarter approach to diagram design.


Control circuit vs. power circuit

For components such as impulse relays, contactors, modular dimmers, and timers, there is always a distinction between:

  • Control circuit: push buttons or switches that control the coil
  • Power circuit: the circuit supplying the load (such as lighting)

In many single-line diagrams, this distinction is not clearly shown. Push buttons and loads are visually connected to the same module, giving the impression that everything is powered by the same circuit.

While this is not necessarily incorrect from a regulatory standpoint, it can lead to misinterpretation. In reality, control and power circuits are often supplied separately.

Why does this matter?

An unclear representation can cause issues during:

  • maintenance
  • troubleshooting
  • system upgrades

For example, a technician might assume that a system is de-energized while the control circuit is still active.


Series vs. parallel connections: a common oversight

Another frequent mistake is failing to distinguish between series and parallel connections.

A typical example:

  • a motion sensor combined with a manual override switch

In reality, this is a parallel connection (OR logic). However, it is often drawn as a series connection in single-line diagrams.

Consequence

The functional logic is misunderstood.

In a series connection, you would expect that:

  • disconnecting the switch cuts power to the entire circuit

But in a parallel setup, the system remains active through the other branch, which can create safety risks during interventions.


How to create clear and accurate diagrams

A good single-line diagram should not only be technically correct but also logically clear. It should accurately reflect how the installation works.
